West Africa: UNICEF Seeks Help for Liberia, Others Over Ebola

UNITED Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) representative in Nigeria, Mrs Jane Giogh, has appealed to countries with adequate human resources capacity to assist Liberia and Sierra-Leone to fight Ebola disease.

Giogh made the call in Port Harcourt on Friday in a chat with newsmen.

She said Liberia, Sierra-Leone and Guinea that were being ravaged by the disease had less human and financial capacities.

According to her, the United Nations (UN) Security Council and General Assembly had a security meeting on Sept.18 to make sure that they were in Liberia and Sierra- Leone to assist them.

She explained that it was being advocated among member states that Nigeria and other countries that had human resources capacity to assist these countries with less capacity to fight the disease.

“This is one of the things I think the UN, African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are also promoting, getting support from other member states to go there to help countries that do not have the kind of structure in Nigeria.

“We are very proud to be in a country that has human resources and that the resources are capable human resources and have the knowledge.

“So, I am here to encourage other member states like Nigeria to go and show solidarity and support these states.

“I think Nigeria has provided resources to ECOWAS to make sure that it has shown solidarity with the rest of the countries.

“But sometimes, it is not only money, you also need people and the courage in humanity; sometimes you have the knowledge but your personality does not go with it,” said the representative.

She said that the best place for children was school and noted that the children that did not get support from home (parents) dropped out of school.

Goigh, however, noted that the disease was still around and urged Nigerians to be more vigilant and make sure that everybody was protected.

“We need to be at alert because people are moving from one place to the other and we want people to move,” she said. (NAN)
