Tanzania: Call to Improve Human Resources for Health

THE World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative in Tanzania has urged the government and the other stakeholders to set goals that would help improve the country’s human resource for health, which is currently reported to have a deficit of about fifty per cent.

Speaking during the closure of a three-day conference of Human Resources for Health (HRH) held in Dar es Salaam over the weekend, Dr Rufaro Chatora, said the conference was a good platform for the government and partners to make decisions that if implemented would improve the country’s human resource for health.

“There is a need for strong commitment if we want the national interests on health sector development to be achieved.

“We need to set goals on where we want to go, so as to make sure we provide proper decisions and workable solutions that have to be implemented effectively in order to improve the country’s human resource for health situation,” added Dr Chatora.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Donan Mmbando, who was the chief guest, applauded the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with Benjamin Mkapa Foundation (BMAF) and IntraHealth International for organising a conference which was of great importance and insisted that a need for such coherent approach was vital to address different issues in the health sector.

“As we are all aware that Tanzania development vision 2025 identifies health as one of the priority sectors and among its main objectives is achieving high quality livelihood for all Tanzanians.

“Therefore the decision for holding this conference was very crucial in providing us inputs and the way forward to improve health services,”said Dr Mmbando.

He reiterated that the conference was done at the right time since the government and partners were currently in the process of developing the next National Human Resource for Health Strategic Plan ( 2014- 2019).

He further noted that the government in the past few years has been addressing the challenges in the public sector including improving the salary scheme of the health sector.
