Miami Dolphins’ Bullying Episode Leads to New Executive Hirings

The Miami Dolphins hired new
executives to oversee the team’s human resources and security,
two months after a report found that three players engaged in a
pattern of harassment of fellow lineman Jonathan Martin.

Dan Caspersen, who was executive vice president for human
resources at Toys “R” Us Inc. from 2006-2013, will oversee the
National Football League team’s human resources, the Dolphins
said yesterday in a news release. Joe Cicini was placed in
charge of security following 23 years with the Miami division of
the FBI, the team said.

The moves come after a Feb. 14 report by investigator Ted Wells, which found that offensive linemen Richie Incognito, John
Jerry and Mike Pouncey persistently taunted fellow lineman
Martin and an athletic trainer with racial, sexual and
homophobic slurs.

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin and members of the front office
weren’t aware of the abuse, the report found. The Dolphins fired
assistant coach Jim Turner and trainer Kevin O’Neill following
the report. Martin, who left the team during the 2013 season in
late October, was traded to the San Francisco 49ers last month.

“We are all committed at this organization to providing a
productive and respectful work environment, as well as ensuring
the safety and security of all of our employees and fans,” Tom Garfinkel, the Dolphins’ chief executive officer, said in a
statement about the hiring of Caspersen and Cicini.

Caspersen managed a human resources staff of 175 people
that served more than 120,000 employees at Toys “R” Us, the
Dolphins said.

Cicini provided crisis-management training to the NFL and
other sports leagues and also organized counter-terrorism
programs for special events in the Miami area, the team said in
its release.
