Metropolitan State University reorganizes human resources division

In the wake of a payroll crisis, the administration of Metropolitan State University in St. Paul has reorganized the leadership of its human resources division.

Metro State President Sue Hammersmith this week held a series of open discussions with faculty. Late Friday afternoon, she sent a brief email to the faculty listserv indicating that Sue Raddatz will serve as interim chief human resources officer until a permanent division head is found.

“A search for a permanent Chief Human Resources Officer will be initiated in the next several months,” Hammersmith wrote.

Raddatz, formerly of Dakota County Technical College, replaces Edna Comedy, who will be conducting a project on “advancing underrepresented talent,” according to Hammersmith’s notice to faculty. Comedy was the third person to lead the division in the past two years.

Raddatz is the former chief human resources officer at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount. Hammersmith’s announcement called her “a human resources professional who brings 37 years of experience in education to our University.”

The crisis began in early September when at least two dozen instructors went to pick up lump-sum summer paychecks that should have amounted to $5,000 or more but instead received as little as $8, if anything at all. Faculty were later informed that salary step increases that were supposed to begin in July may not roll out until October.

The school is pursuing a payroll audit throughout its four campuses in St. Paul, Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park. School officials have said they’ve caught up with payments for summer faculty, but some instructors say payroll problems continue.

The Inter Faculty Organization, the collective bargaining representative for faculty at Metro State, recently voted to present the administration with a series of additional demands, including a request to have internal and external auditors verify the past six years of all faculty compensation and benefits.
